University of Malaya Medical Centre ( UMMC) ( Malay: Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, abbr: PPUM ), [1] formerly known as University Hospital, is a government-funded teaching hospital and medical instructions located in Pantai Dalam, southwest corner of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) has been in existence since 1998 in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur. It was initially established as an initiative by the Universiti Malaya (UM) and the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) to halt the “brain drain” of medical experts from public sector to the private.
The 1,617-bed UMMC is the first and largest teaching hospital as well as the second largest hospital in Malaysia. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for FoM and is one of the main tertiary hospitals in the Klang Valley, receiving over a million outpatients every year. It also serves as a referral centre from hospitals throughout the region.
The University of Malaya's coat of arms was designed under a council established in 1961, chaired by Tan Sri Y.C. Foo. The members of the committee involved in the design were the chairman of the council, Y.C. Foo, Professor A. Oppenheim (the vice-chancellor) and Professor Ungku Aziz (later regius professor).
