The Houston Independent School District ( HISD) is the largest public school system in Texas, and the eighth-largest in the United States.  Houston ISD serves as a community school district for most of the city of Houston and several nearby and insular municipalities in addition to some unincorporated areas.
Since HISD distributed most of its funds to junior and high schools, the "Supplementary Aids committee" founded by Hogg and the other women funded a furnished library for River Oaks.  Hogg, HISD officials, and a group of mothers selected Eva Margaret Davis as the school's first principal.

Worthing Junior-Senior High School was built in 1958,  and it opened on January 27, 1958. The students zoned to Worthing previously attended Miller Junior High School and Yates High School.  The school is named after Evan Edward Worthing, a Houston real-estate developer who set up a scholarship trust for African-American HISD students.

The campus has a grade 6-8 neighborhood program together with a 9-12 Futures Academy, a non-zoned high school program that offers an associate degree track.
