The History of Duke University began when Brown's Schoolhouse, a private subscription school in Randolph County, North Carolina (in the present-day town of Trinity ), was founded in 1838. The school was renamed to Union Institute Academy in 1841, Normal College in 1851, and to Trinity College in 1859.

Duke University School of Law ( Duke Law School or Duke Law) is the law school of Duke University, a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. One of Duke's 10 schools and colleges, the School of Law is a constituent academic unit that began in 1868 as the Trinity College School of Law.

In 1924, Horace Trumbauer 's firm was commissioned to build a new campus for Duke University. In 1925, Julian Abele, a prominent architect and the first African-American graduate of the University of Pennsylvania who at the time worked for Trumbauer, began work on a rendering of the proposed West Campus.

Formerly known as the Duke University Hospital and Medical School, it was established in 1930 with a bequest from James B. Duke. The Medical Center now occupies 7.5 million square feet (700,000 m 2) in 90 buildings on 210 acres (850,000 m 2 ). It is consistently ranked among the top ten health care organizations in the United States.
