Descartes shared a number of Rosicrucian goals and habits. Like the Rosicrucians, he lived alone and in seclusion, changed his residence often (during his 22 years in the Netherlands, he lived in 18 different places), practiced medicine without charge, attempted to increase human longevity, and took an optimistic view of the capacity of science to improve the human condition.
René Descartes (1596–1650) was a creative mathematicianof the first order, an important scientific thinker, and an originalmetaphysician. During the course of his life, he was a mathematicianfirst, a natural scientist or “natural philosopher” second, and ametaphysician third. In mathematics, he developed the techniques thatmade possible algebraic (or “analytic”) geometry.
René Descartes (/ d eɪ ˈ k ɑːr t / or UK: / ˈ d eɪ k ɑːr t /; French: [ʁəne dekaʁt] ; Latinized: Renatus Cartesius; 31 March 1596 – 11 February 1650: 58 ) was a French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician, widely considered a seminal figure in the emergence of modern philosophy and science.
Descartes is considered by many to be the father of modern philosophy, because his ideas departed widely from current understanding in the early 17th century, which was more feeling-based.
René Descartes, (born March 31, 1596, La Haye, Touraine, France—died Feb. 11, 1650, Stockholm, Swed.), French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher, considered the father of modern philosophy. Educated at a Jesuit college, he joined the military in 1618 and traveled widely for the next 10 years. In 1628 he settled in Holland, where he would remain until 1649.
As Descartes puts it in the Principles, everything “which can be attributed to body presupposes extension, and is merely a mode of an extended thing,” which, according to Descartes, is aligned with the view that “…shape is unintelligible except in an extended thing…” (AT VIIIA 25; CSM I 210). In this sense, insofar as a shaped thing is made intelligible to a human mind, the innate idea of extension is involved.
a. Against Scholasticism. Descartes is often called the “Father of Modern Philosophy,” implying that he provided the seed for a new philosophy that broke away from the old in important ways. This “old” philosophy is Aristotle’s as it was appropriated and interpreted throughout the later medieval period.
