Tournai is located in the Picardy Wallonia and Romance Flanders region of Belgium, at the southern limit of the Flemish plain, in the basin of the river Scheldt. Tournai was seized by the Salic Franks in the 5th century under the Frankish king Clovis I, the first king of the Franks. It became the capital of the Merovingian territory.
