A new high school was built on the property in June 1923. MHS was officially recognized as an accredited high school in June 1924 by the Texas State Department of Education, thus allowing its students to attend Texas colleges and universities without having to take remedial coursework.
North Shore opened in fall 1962 with grades 10–11 at a time when 9th grade students were typically located at junior high schools in Texas. In May 1965, the school graduated its first class of seniors that had spent all three years at North Shore. In 1999, a new larger campus was opened approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the original.
Opened in 1998, O'Connor High School followed the tradition of all the Northside high schools in being named after a Supreme Court justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, who served from 1981 to 2006, and was the first female justice on United States Supreme Court.
