In the spring of 1944, the congregation of Golden Gate Baptist Church authorized its deacons to meet with a committee from the First Southern Baptist Church of San Francisco to formulate plans to establish a theological seminary.

Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, one of six theological schools affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, has changed its name to Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention as the school has moved its main campus to Southern California ahead of the upcoming fall semester.
