Diermeier was born and grew up in West Berlin and experienced first-hand the fall of the Berlin Wall. His dad worked as a tailor and Daniel was the first in his family to go to college. In 1984–1986 he completed his time in the West German National Civil Service in Munich. He is married and has two children.
