Banco Santander Totta S.A., also known as Banco Santander (Portugal), is a subsidiary of Spanish bank Banco Santander in Portugal. Founded in 1988, it is currently the largest private bank in Portugal. In 2000, the then Banco Totta was acquired by Santander Group, later changing its name to Banco Santander Totta.

In 2000, he became chief executive of Banco Santander Totta in Portugal. He also became executive vice president of Banco Santander in Spain and a member of its management committee. He joined Abbey National as a non-executive director in November 2004. In August 2006, he moved to the UK, and became CEO of Abbey and its successor Santander UK.
The company was founded in 2003 as Banco Totta de Cabo Verde (BTCV) — a local subsidiary of the Portuguese Banco Totta & Açores acquired by Banco Santander in 2000.
