Coronado High School, named after the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, opened to students in grades 9-12 during fall 1961 as a public comprehensive high school with an emphasis on college preparatory and vocational/technical curriculum. The school mascot is the Coronado Don, don being the name for a Spanish nobleman.
The school, generally known as the Scottsdale Culinary Institute was one of the largest culinary programs in the area. It was founded by Elizabeth Leite in 1986 and under Jon-Paul Hutchins, more than one hundred thousand students went through the program in twenty five years and earned associates or bachelor's degrees.
