East Rowan is a 3A school in the South Piedmont Conference. [7] The school's mascot is the Mustangs, wearing the school colors of red and blue. [8] The East Rowan baseball team has had many successful years, winning two state 3A championships (1995, 2010), and being runner up in 2008. [9]

South High School has one of the most active alumni association of all the public high schools in Denver. South High Alumni and Friends, Inc. (SHAFI) has office and museum space in the basement of the high school, in what was once a classroom and the gun range for the JROTC program.
Plans for the school facility were announced in 1968 with an estimated cost of $3.5 million (equivalent to $30.7 million in 2023). The building was designed by architect Frederic P. Wiedersum Associates to accommodate 1,500 students and included 26 classrooms, a gym, a cafeteria, and a 600-seat auditorium. [8]
The original Toms River High School graduated its first class in 1891 and the current building opened for students in 1951. [10] In 1969, when the high school was found to be too small, a second high school, Toms River High School North was opened [11] and South was appended onto the school's original name, and a third high school in the district, Toms River High School East, was opened in 1979.

On August 4, 1958, the Rowan County Board voted unanimously to name the North Rowan High School athletic field "The James Carr Eagle Athletic Field". On September 21, 1958, the building was dedicated with Dr. Charles Carroll, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, as speaker at the ceremonies.
