University of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow (abbreviated as Glas. in post-nominals; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Ghlaschu [4]) is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by papal bull in 1451 [ O.S. 1450], [5] it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities.
It is based in Glasgow, Scotland. The Institute is named in recognition of Sir George Beatson, a surgeon, who in 1912 established a research department in the cancer hospital in Glasgow. This department became independent from the hospital in 1967 when the Institute was founded by the then Director, Dr John Paul.
There are fifteen universities based in Scotland, the Open University, and three other institutions of higher education. [1] [2] The first university in Scotland was St John's College, St Andrews, founded in 1418. [3] St Salvator's College was added to St. Andrews in 1450.
