Tao Nan became the first Chinese school to change the medium of instruction from the Hokkien dialect to Mandarin. One of the teachers was the philanthropist Lee Kong Chian (1894–1967). Pioneer artist Pan Shou was the headmaster from 1932 to 1940. In 1982, Tao Nan School moved to a new campus in Marine Parade, where it still remains to this date.

The Old Tao Nan School is a historic building in Singapore, located along Armenian Street in the Museum Planning Area, within the Central Area. The building was originally built for the Tao Nan School to serve the local Hokkien community, but the school has since been relocated to its current location in Marine Parade .
Tao Nan School (1892–1957) Holy Innocents' High School was founded as Tao Nan School in 1892, as one of the first Chinese Mission Schools in Singapore. Bible studies and classical Chinese were taught. In 1920, the name of the school was changed from Tao Nan to Holy Innocents' Boy School. It means pure, wholesome and innocent.

The museum first opened at the Old Tao Nan School building on 22 April 1997 at Armenian Street, with exhibits largely centred on Chinese civilisation. With the restoration of the Empress Place Building , the museum established its new flagship museum there on 2 March 2003, rapidly expanding the collection to other areas of Asia.
Ai Tong School is affiliated to the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) since 1929. It is the second oldest school amongst the five schools that are affiliated to the SHHK, the oldest being Tao Nan School.
