Vanderbilt University (informally Vandy or VU) is a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee.Founded in 1873, it was named in honor of shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who provided the school its initial $1 million endowment in the hopes that his gift and the greater work of the university would help to heal the sectional wounds inflicted by the American Civil War.

The first project was the building of a 24-room Spanish revival mansion designed by famed New York architecture firm Warren and Wetmore , one of two firms responsible for designing and constructing New York's Grand Central Terminal , another product of the Vanderbilt family execution.
A statue of Cornelius Vanderbilt, longtime owner of the New York Central, stands at the center of the terminal's south facade, directly below its clock and facing the Park Avenue Viaduct. The work was sculpted by Ernst Plassmann , and is of bronze, 8.5 feet (2.6 m) tall and weighing 4 tons, with a 9-foot-tall granite pedestal.
