Massachusetts (/ ˌ m æ s ə ˈ tʃ uː s ɪ t s / ⓘ, /-z ɪ t s / MASS-ə-CHOO-sits, -zits; Massachusett: Muhsachuweesut [məhswatʃəwiːsət]), officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is a state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States.
Based on the form of government, there are 292 towns and 59 cities in Massachusetts. Some municipalities, however, still refer to themselves as "towns" even though they have a city form of government. The Census Bureau classifies towns in Massachusetts as a type of "minor civil division" and cities as a type of "populated place".

Mount Greylock is the highest point in the state of Massachusetts at 3,489 feet (1,063 meters). Located in northwest region of the state, it is part of the Taconic Mountains, a geologically distinct range from the nearby Berkshires and Green Mountains. Expansive views and a small area of sub-alpine forest characterize its upper reaches.
