History 1566 to 1896. The first Catholic presence in the South Florida region was the establishment of a mission on Upper Matecumbe Key in the Florida Keys region by Spanish Jesuits in 1566. After several years of disease and turbulent relations with the Native American inhabitants, the missionaries returned to Spain.
