On July 1, 2004, the Fox Valley Community School District merged into the Van Buren district. In January 2016 the Harmony district and the Harmony Community School District agreed to begin a grade-sharing arrangement in which Harmony-zoned students attended Van Buren schools for grades 7–12. This arrangement began in fall 2016.
The working name for the school had been East Queens High School, but before it opened the school was officially named Martin Van Buren High School, after the Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States and the first U.S. president born in New York state. It opened to students on September 12, 1955.
