First opened on September 2, 1895 (one session held in fall 1893), it is the oldest public high school in Cabarrus County and one of the oldest extant in North Carolina. It became part of Cabarrus County Schools in 1983 when Concord City Schools merged with the county school system. It is also a half regular high school and half IB high school.

A rainbow above the school. The student body consists of students in grades 9–12, with about 350 students per grade. 2010–2011 was the first year without students from feeder high schools Jay M. Robinson High School and Central Cabarrus High School. For the 2022–2023 school year the enrollment was 1,720. [1]
The school had 138 students and six teachers. The next year there were 463 students and 13 teachers, and the first 10th grade graduating class had 13 members. In 1934 the school added ten rooms, and in 1952 a cafeteria was added, with students paying 25 cents for lunch. [2] The building which became the middle school was added in 1957. [2]
The school is a part of the Cabarrus County Schools system. While the school has a Concord mailing address, it is physically located in the city limits of neighboring Kannapolis. [2] It opened in 1966, merging the former high schools in the Odell and Winecoff communities.
