It is located directly south of Jakarta within the Jakarta Metropolitan Area in Indonesia. It has an area of 199.91 km 2.

It had a population of 2,062,232 at the 2010 census and 2,226,812 at the 2020 census, and 2,244,623 as at mid 2022 according to the official estimates (comprising 1,127,196 males and 1,117,437 females). It is the third most populous among the five administrative cities of Jakarta, after East Jakarta and West Jakarta.
Total population. On 21 January 2021, Statistics Indonesia released the result of the 2020 census. It found the total population of Indonesia to be 270,203,917 people, compared to the population in the year 2010 of 237,641,326 people. This is an increase of 32,562,591 people (13.70% in 10 years or an average of 1.25% per year).
