In the 1950s, Charles Oliver Wellington, an accountant from Massachusetts, purchased about 18,000 acres (73 km 2) of central Palm Beach County swampland located south of Florida State Road 80 (locally known as Southern Boulevard) and west of U.S. Route 441.
Wellington is located in southern Collingsworth County. U.S. Route 83 runs along the eastern edge of the city, leading north 26 miles (42 km) to Shamrock and Interstate 40, and south 31 miles (50 km) to Childress. Texas State Highway 203 leads east 13 miles (21 km) to the Oklahoma border and west 14 miles (23 km) to Quail.
Abolished in 1899 and annexed to Webb County. Foley County, formed in 1887 from Presidio County. Annexed in 1897 to Brewster County. Greer County, formed in 1860. Separated from Texas by U.S. Supreme Court ruling in United States v. the State of Texas, 162 U.S. 1 (1896) and is now part of southwestern Oklahoma.
