It lies 25 miles (40 km) south-southeast of San Simon and at the mouth of Cave Creek Canyon on the east side of the Chiricahua Mountains. Often called the Yosemite of Arizona, the rock walled canyon is composed of fused volcanic tuff.
It is the only high school in the New Castle Area School District, which serves New Castle and Taylor Township. It was originally founded in 1879. The school is a combined junior high school and senior high school, educating students in 6th through 12th grades. Its total student population is 1,524 as of the 2021-22 school year.
