Hatfield was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, on July 15, 1875. [1] His property speculator father Stephen moved the family to Southern California in 1886, settling firstly in San Diego, where Hatfield Sr built three houses, before establishing a home on a forty acre ranch and olive grove at Gopher Canyon near Bonsall, forty miles north of the city.
