The depot is located in Calhoun County, Alabama, 10 miles (16 km) west of Anniston. It covers 25 square miles (65 km 2) of land, or 15,200 acres (6,200 ha). Its northern side is the Pelham Range portion of Fort McClellan. The central and northern portions of the depot span over 13,000 acres (5,300 ha) and serve as an ammunition storage area.
Anniston Ordnance Depot was established in February 1941. In 1952, the depot was assigned a maintenance mission for the overhaul and repair of combat vehicles. In 1962, the installation was renamed Anniston Army Depot and became part of the Army Materiel Command. In 1976, Anniston Army Depot became a part of the U.S. Army Depot System Command.
The division operates the Lima Army Tank Plant and General Dynamics Anniston Operations in Anniston, Alabama, along with smaller operations in Tallahassee, Florida, and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
