Piedmont was founded in 1960 as the second high school in Union County. According to local historian Mrs. Dawn Stegall, the land upon which the school is built was worked by enemy prisoners of war from nearby Camp Sutton during World War II. After 2005, school enrollment was divided due to the newly built Porter Ridge High School.
Piedmont High School is an academically strong school, scoring a 10 out of 10 for test scores at the website GreatSchools.net. Located on a 1,000-acre (400 ha) campus in the rolling hills of central Virginia's Piedmont region, Fork Union Military Academy was initially founded as Fork Union Academy in October 1898 by Dr. William E.
