Columbine High School was the site of one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern United States history. [8] The shootings occurred on April 20, 1999, when senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher, and wounded 24 others, 21 of them by gunfire, before they both committed suicide in the library.
The library where most of the massacre took place was removed and replaced with an atrium. In 2001, a new library, the HOPE memorial library, was built next to the west entrance. On February 26, 2004, thousands of pieces of evidence from the massacre were put on display at the Jefferson County fairgrounds in Golden.
The portion of Columbine in Arapahoe County is served by the Littleton Public Schools. Jefferson County Public Library operates the Columbine Library.
