September 28, 1973 [2] Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is a 50-acre (20 ha) state park [3] located at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua, New York, at the north end of Canandaigua Lake, in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The house and gardens are open to the public every day, May through October.
Notable buildings include the Administration Building (1928), Wards A and B (1925), Wards C and D (1930), Wards E and F (1932), Kitchen (1926) and Dining Hall (1930), Officers' Quarters (1927), and Nurses Dormitories (1930 and 1932). In 1967, a new Asheville, VA Medical Center complex was built adjacent to the original.

By 1973, the medical complex had 2307 beds, including those in a 120-bed nursing home. Dr. Toussaint T. Tildon was a psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School graduate and one of the first six African-American doctors recruited to the new hospital. He worked at the center for 34 years, for the last 12 serving as director, from 1946 to 1958.
