Heflin is a city and the county seat of Cleburne County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 3,431. It is located approximately halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta along Interstate 20.
Cleburne County is a county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,056. [1] Its county seat is Heflin. [2] Its name is in honor of Patrick R. Cleburne of Arkansas [3] who rose to the rank of major general in the Confederate States Army.
History In March 1905, residents of Heflin and southern Cleburne County petitioned governor William Jelks to move the county seat from Edwardsville to Heflin. A referendum was held in December 1905, and Heflin won by 88 votes. The John Morgan House (also known as The Colonial Cottage) is a historic house in Heflin, Alabama. The house was built circa 1880 by John Francis and Louise Perryman Morgan, on land given to John for his service in the Mexican–American War. After Heflin was incorporated in 1892, Morgan was elected its first mayor.
