JPEG. JPEG ( / ˈdʒeɪpɛɡ / JAY-peg, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group) [2] is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality.
Image compression is a type of data compression applied to digital images, to reduce their cost for storage or transmission. JPEG 2000 (JP2) is an image compression standard and coding system. Compression of an image to reduce file size (in Kb) is usually "lossy" and is not advised for featured pictures. Image compression will reduce download times and save disk space, but it does so at the expense of fine detail and overall image quality. If in doubt, when saving JPEG files, always select the "maximum" quality setting.
