The Ohio State College of Medicine was established in 1914 with William Means as the first dean. In the 1940s, the school had a two-year medical education program. Early in the state's history, Athens was chosen as a suitable location. In September 1947, the School of Pharmacy opened as part of the University of Arizona Liberal Arts College. Eighty-three students were enrolled. It became a full-fledged college in 1949, with 206 students and seven faculty members. Faculty and staff moved into new pharmacy building on the Arizona Health Sciences Center part of the campus in 1982.
