Moffat Academy traces its history to the local grammar school founded in 1639 by Dr Johnstone. During the 1810s, the school entered a low period as there were suspicions that the funds endowed by Johnstone's estate were misused. [1] It then merged with a local parish school in 1834 and named "Moffat Academy".

Carruthers was the keeper of the Botanical Department at the Natural History Museum from 1871 to 1895. He was a consulting botanist to the Royal Agricultural Society (1871–1909). History The pitch was once the playing fields for one of the local private schools as was the field that the current schools playing fields are located. After the school closed the ground was used by the local cricket team until it ceased to exist leaving only the pavilion on the academy's side of the field as the only evidence of its former use.

Life. Born in Edinburgh on 3 March 1835, he was the elder son of George Rae and his wife, Catherine Fraser, both of Edinburgh. After education at Moffat Academy and Heidelberg University, he entered Lincoln's Inn as a student on 2 November 1857, and on 30 April 1861 was called to the bar. But he then gave up the law for a career as a journalist.
