" California Soul " is a funk - soul tune written by Ashford & Simpson, issued originally as the B-side of the Messengers ' single "Window Shopping" in 1967 under the Motown group of labels.
Background. Marlena Shaw was born in New Rochelle, New York.She was first introduced to music by her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a jazz trumpet player. In an interview with The New York Times, she told the reporter: "He [Jimmy Burgess] introduced me to good music through records – Dizzy [Gillespie], Miles [Davis], a lot of gospel things, and Al Hibbler, who really knows how to phrase a song."
The best known version was recorded by The 5th Dimension later in 1968. It was featured on their 1968 album Stoned Soul Picnic. [2] The song was produced by Bones Howe and arranged by Bill Holman, Bob Alcivar, Ray Pohlman, and Howe. [3] It reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #45 on the U.S. R&B chart.

Jazz and R&B singer Marlena Shaw, known for the widely sampled "California Soul," died Friday. She was 81.
