Boston (US: / ˈ b ɔː s t ə n / ⓘ [9]) is the capital and most populous city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States.The city serves as the cultural and financial center of the New England region of the Northeastern United States.
The total population is 6,981,974, making it the 16th most populous state as of 2023 estimates. [5] Massachusetts has a density of 895 people per square mile, [6] making it the third most dense of the fifty states (fifth including District of Columbia and Puerto Rico).
Cities and towns can vote to accept a new mandate, or ask the Massachusetts State Auditor to determine the amount of funding owed; if the legislature does not provide that amount then ask the Massachusetts Superior Court for a ruling that grants the municipality an exemption from complying with unfunded mandates.
