In 1973, the New York University School of Engineering and Science merged into Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, which in turn merged into NYU to form New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering in 2014. He was an Assistant United States Attorney from 1991 to 2002, when he prosecuted high-profile organized crime cases. He served as a lead prosecutor in Robert S. Mueller's Special Counsel's Office (2017–2019), as Chief of the Fraud Section in the Department of Justice (2015–2017) and is currently a professor at NYU Law School.
In 2007, he joined the faculty at NYU School of Law. His scholarship focuses on civil procedure, bankruptcy law, complex litigation, the federal courts, and class actions. McKenzie returned to NYU Law in 2017 after serving for two years as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel.
