It was established in 1964 and opened for classes in 1965 after acquiring the entirety of Fenn College, a private school that had been in operation since 1923. Marshall Cleveland (c. 1832 – May 11, 1862) was a guerrilla fighter and criminal active during the American Civil War. Ostensibly a Jayhawker fighting for the Union, Cleveland indiscriminately plundered the Kansas-Missouri border until he was killed by members of the 6th Kansas Cavalry Regiment in 1862.
It is part of the University System of Georgia and a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Fort Valley State University is the state's 1890 land-grant university and enrolls over 2,500 students. Approximately 90% of the student body is of African-American descent. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County.
