It was founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works and currently has a collection of more than 50,000 glass objects, some over 3,500 years old.
In 1980, The City of Corning offered its former 1893 City Hall, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, to house the Museum collections. Corning Glass Works funded the substantial exterior and interior renovation costs. On June 19, 1982, the museum re-opened as The Rockwell Museum in the restored Old City Hall.

The Corning Museum of Glass was designed by Gunnar Birkerts & Associates. Corning's first new museum building since 1951, it opened in 1980 with the galleries well above the flood plain.
Corning's first attempt was a failure, the cast blank having voids. Using lessons learned, Corning was successful in the casting of the second blank. After a year of cooling, during which it was almost lost to a flood, in 1935, the blank was completed. The first blank now resides in Corning's Museum of Glass.
