Tisdel (born May 28, 1975) [2] is an American woman whose early life and involvement with the December 1993 murders of Brandon Teena, Lisa Lambert, and Phillip DeVine at the hands of John Lotter and Tom Nissen is chronicled in the 1998 documentary The Brandon Teena Story and the 1999 film Boys Don't Cry (which left out DeVine). The film is a dramatization of the real-life story of Brandon Teena (played by Hilary Swank ), an American trans man who attempts to find himself and love in Nebraska but falls victim to a brutal hate crime perpetrated by two male acquaintances. The film co-stars Chloë Sevigny as Brandon's girlfriend, Lana Tisdel .

The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 1999. Fox Searchlight Pictures gave the film a limited release on October 22, 1999.
