By August, the school was given a full ministerial recognition as a secondary grant aided school now bearing the name York Castle High School. On January 7, 1958, the new school building was opened with 195 day students and 40 boarders. In February, the official opening of the building was done by the Hon. N.W. Manley, Premier of Jamaica.

History. Charlemont High School was 'conceived' by the late John Bernard Stephenson, a former Member of Parliament for North St Catherine.
