Gumla is considered to be the birthplace of the Hindu God Hanuman. A temple a few kilometers away from the city off the Gumla- Ghaghra road is dedicated to him and his mother. The district contains mountains named Risyamook, which are mentioned in the Ramayana . The district is currently a part of the Red Corridor. [4]
Buses, jeeps, and three-wheelers connect Jhumri Telaiya with nearby towns and villages. The town is accessible via the National highway 31, which is popularly known as Ranchi-Patna Road. It is located 23 km from the Grand Trunk Road. The nearest airport is Ranchi (162 km), the capital of the Jharkhand state.
Chatra was the “headquarters” of Ramgarh district in the 18th-19th century. The renowned reformer, Raja Rammohan Roy, was sheristadar in Ramgarh district, in 1804–05, and used to function from both Ramgarh and Chatra. Subsequently, Ramgarh district became part of North-western Frontier Agency and Hazaribagh district came up.
