I am experiencing the same issue. I have always used my @hotmail.com address. Later, I added a third-party address (my own domain) that also had MS Exchange to my Microsoft settings. I then set my domain address as the primary contact address and, unfortunately, removed the @hotmail.com address from the account.
If the password is correct, you will be able to log into your account. If the password is incorrect , you will still be notified of too many failed login attempts.
