On November 30, 1999, the Winter Haven Hospital Board of Trustees voted unanimously on expansion and renovation of Lake Wales Medical Center. They also approved the demolition of a building on campus, known as "the old hospital." On December 2, 2002 Lake Wales Medical Center was bought by Community Health Systems from Winter Haven Hospital.
