The Friendswood Independent School District was established on December 21, 1948. The district covers 15 square miles (39 km 2) and borders the Alvin, Pearland and Clear Creek school districts. The original building no longer exists, but other previous locations still do: the Frisco ISD Student Opportunity Center (on Maple Street in "Center City" Frisco) was Frisco High School for many years; in fact, the words "Frisco High School" are still etched into the stone above the main entrance.

The school opened in the fall of 2003, initially to serve 9th and 10th graders. It was the second to open in the district, after Frisco High School.At the time, the school served all of the school district's area east of Preston Road as well as portions of north Plano and western McKinney.
It is one of twelve high schools in Frisco ISD. In 2012, the official enrollment from 9th-12th grade was 952. Naming of the school was inspired by the movie Lone Star (1996) from director John Sayles, a fictional neo-western murder mystery involving the Texas Rangers. The school mascot and sports teams are the Rangers.
