Rowan County (/ r oʊ ˈ æ n / roh-AN) is a county in the U.S. state of North Carolina that was formed in 1753, as part of the British Province of North Carolina.It was originally a vast territory with unlimited western boundaries, but its size was reduced to 524 square miles (1,360 km 2) after several counties were formed from Rowan County in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Salisbury District was based in the town of Salisbury, North Carolina, in Rowan County. Salisbury was established as the county seat of Rowan County in 1755, two years after Rowan County was created from Anson County. Edmund Fanning was made the first official associate justice for the Judicial District of Salisbury in March 1766.
The Rowan County Regiment was involved in 31 known engagements during the American Revolution from 1775 to 1782. They fought in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The battle of Torrence's Tavern was the only battle fought in what became Iredell County, North Carolina in 1788, where many of the regiment's soldiers resided after the war.
The Rowan County regiment was split on October 22, 1775 into two distinct regiment, the 1st Rowan County Regiment and the 2nd Rowan County Regiment. On December 22 that same year, the North Carolina Provincial Council split the Pasquotank County Regiment into two separate and distinct regiments, the 1st and 2nd Pasquotank County regiments.
