Originally form Virginia the J.A. Evans Family moved from Edgecombe County, N.C. through Nash County, N.C. to Pine Level in Johnston County, N.C. in 1850 A.D. and started a farm which eventually through land purchases became the 6,000 acre Tall Pines Plantation, Founded in 1870 A.D. by Jane Barns Evans widow of J.A. Evans CSA.
Before the 2018-19 school year, the configuration of the schools was as follows: Franklin Middle School at Sampson G. Smith was called Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School, for students in grades 5-6. Franklin Middle School at Hamilton Street was called Franklin Middle School, for students in grades 7-8.
Harrells is located in southeastern Sampson County. A part of the northeastern side of town falls within the southwestern corner of Duplin County. U.S. Route 421 passes through the town, leading north 22 miles (35 km) to Clinton, the Sampson County seat, and south 40 miles (64 km) to Wilmington.
