Currently the web client does provide a link preview but it only contains the link itself which is useless. For all those using WhatsApp Web in Chrome - if it is very slow - just delete the cached db, i.e. delete the IndexedDB. Open whatsapp web in Chrome web browser, F12 (enter dev tools), Now go to Application tab and delete all IndexedDB one by one. It will start fresh and for me it is now blazing fast. Enjoy :)
