Stanly County is a county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 62,504. [1] Its county seat is Albemarle. [2] Stanly County comprises the Albemarle, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Charlotte - Concord, NC-SC Combined Statistical Area .
The renamed Bladen County was subdivided to create Anson County in 1750, which in turn spawned Montgomery County in 1779. Anson County granted a permit for Colson's Ordinary in the mid-18th century, at that time Stanly County was part of Anson. That permit may have been the first such granted in North Carolina. During the Revolutionary War Colson's land was the site of a patriot victory over local Tory forces.

J.D. Bivins took over once again December 10, 1919, and the next day the News merged with the Stanly County Herald, started that year with A.C. Huneycutt as editor. Huneycutt remained in his position with the Stanly News-Herald. Bivins sold his share of the News-Herald in 1920, and in 1922 bought the Piedmont Press, which became the Albemarle Press
