Tao Nan became the first Chinese school to change the medium of instruction from the Hokkien dialect to Mandarin. One of the teachers was the philanthropist Lee Kong Chian (1894–1967). Pioneer artist Pan Shou was the headmaster from 1932 to 1940. In 1982, Tao Nan School moved to a new campus in Marine Parade, where it still remains to this date.
The location of the holding site was at Aljunied Road, which is the former Aljunied Primary School campus. Kong Hwa School operated there from 1992 to 1996. Kong Hwa School underwent its second major school upgrading project in 2010, with the aim of providing students with better school facilities and conducive learning environment.
