Oxford is the 14th most populous city in Mississippi, and the county seat of Lafayette County, 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Memphis. A college town, the University of Mississippi or "Ole Miss" is adjacent to the city. Founded in 1837, it is named for Oxford, England. Purchasing the land from a Chickasaw, pioneers founded Oxford in 1837.

Construction of the university was completed in the rural town of Oxford in 1848.
High-school students first attended public school in Oxford in 1886 when a building was erected to accommodate twelve grades of students. The University High School was the primary school in Oxford until 1963 when the town was integrated and the Oxford School District was formed. As the city of Oxford grew, so did the student population.
