Following her graduation from North Texas State Teacher's College in 1923, she worked as a teacher, and eventually principal, in public schools in Texas, New York, and New Jersey until 1944. In 1944, Howard became a professor at Frostburg State University in the English department. She would continue in that role until 1967.
