Founded in 1854, the school is the oldest of the 11 Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) schools in Singapore. The school is currently recognised as a Centre of Excellence for Language and the Arts.
In 1982, St. Nicholas Girls' School was provisionally relocated to Toa Payoh. It moved to its current campus in Ang Mo Kio in 1985 when the site was completed. During this time, another school, CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), was set up and officially opened on 17 August 1985. CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) is still in operation at the Toa Payoh campus.
The "original" convent school is the present-day CHIJ Secondary and CHIJ Primary schools in Toa Payoh. CHIJ Saint Nicholas Girls' School (CHIJ SNGS) was co-located on the same site and functioned as the Chinese section while CHIJ Secondary and Primary were English-medium. Toa Payoh, in Hokkien, translates as "big swamp " (with toa meaning "big" and payoh meaning "swamp"). The Malay word for swamp is paya. It is the Chinese equivalent of Paya Lebar, which translates to "big swamp land". Toa Payoh's old Chinese name, was known as Ang Chiang San (alternatively An Xiang Shan) or "burial hill".
The Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus was the second Catholic school and first all-girls Catholic school to be established in Singapore. Soon the number of pupils increased and the school became well-known. In 1894, there were 167 pupils. Ten years later, the enrolment had increased to 300. Secondary education began in 1905.
