The opening sentence in the lead says "Brandon Teena (December 12, 1972 ā December 31, 1993) was an American trans man who was raped and murdered in Humboldt, Nebraska." Trans man means "male who was asigned 'female' at birth" i.e. born biologically female but self-identifies as male.
